Today we were lucky to get a visit from Iain Smart a third year Ethical Hacking student at Abertay and a member of the Ethical Hacking society Hacksoc. Iain explained to our S4 National 5 students what Ethical Hacking is, what the course involved and what the career prospects were like for graduates from the course. Iain also took the students through some basic programming in a language called Python.

St Paul’s Computing department was lucky to have a visit from Dr Rachel Menzies, a lecturer at Dundee University School of Computing.  Dr Menzies worked with the pupils using our programmable Arduino boards. Pupils got to try out wiring up and programming LEDS and some even got round to programming their own tunes through speakers that they wired up to the boards.

Digital Commonwealth / Young Scot Legacy Event

Three of our Digital Commonwealth team - Cari Wilde, Evan Robertson and DJ Bradley were invited down to The Shore to share their experiences of this project. The pupils got a chance to offer their ideas on how to engage young people over the themed events planned in Scotland over the next four years starting with the Year of Food and Drink in 2015 and culminating in Scotland’s Year of Young People in 2018. The pupils also received a Young Scot goody bag for taking part.

Parents and pupils from our feeder primary schools took part in Scratch programming workshops, ably assisted by two S3 Computing pupils John and Ali. Parents and pupils alike did a great job of programming a character that moved around the screen.

A group of our S3 Computing pupils visited the Science Centre today to take part in three workshops aimed at showing pupils a selection of the wide variety of opportunities available to them in the field of Computing Science. Pupils learned about Sound Engineering, Robotics and Networking. The workshops were hosted by Perth College, St Andrews University and local technology firm Brightsolid. One of the highlights was a demonstration of the Nao robot performing some tai chi.

Aswell as receiving a cash prize for winning the Dundee Cupcake Competition, Leah also got the opportunity to meet celebrity chefs Nick Nairn and Paul Rankin.  Leah received signed copies of their book and also had a good chat with them.  They happily posed for some photos with Leah.

Well done to S3 pupil Leigha McCafferty who has won this years Cupcake competition.  The theme for this year was 'Commonwealth Games'. This is the second year in a row a St Paul's pupil has won the competition.  Leah wowed the judges with her clever designs.   Leah received a £50 cash price and got the opportunity to meet celebrity chefs at this years flower and food festival. Here are the winning cupcakes.

Enterprising Maths in Dundee

For the second year running St Paul’s were awarded 1st place in the Enterprising Maths in Dundee competition.    The competition ran throughout the day with varied and challenging rounds. 

The teams faced stiff competition however St Paul’s Red emerged as overall winners.  Well done.
